Teamsters Local 911 Denounces the Janus Decision
Earlier today, the United States Supreme Court overturned more than four decades of legal precedent by declaring fair share fees unconstitutional in the Janus v. AFSCME case and forcing Union members to pay for the representation of those employees who refuse to pitch in their fair share fees.
Teamsters Local 911 condemns any attempt to take away the freedom of workers to stand together and bargain for fair wages and better working condition.
It’s no secret that corporate CEO’s and the wealthy elite have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in an attempt to divide workers and destroy labor unions. This is just another example of how the wealthy have managed to rig the system against the American people.
Since the 19th century, labor unions have been the primary force in counterbalancing corporate power and giving a voice to the American people. By standing together, working people in California have achieved tremendous victories benefiting working families such as fair wages, paid sick leave, paid vacation leave, paid medical benefits, securing CalPERS pension for retirement, and much more.
No court decision can eradicate the decades of progress made by the labor movement and union members across the country. What these corporate elites must understand is that our power comes from working people and no amount of funding can conquer us. We will continue to organize to assure that we have a seat at the table and that everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream.
